Manual Device Registation
A device that cannot authenticate with a student CU account must be manually registered.
This includes TVs, Game Consoles, etc. To manually register a device, you need the MAC address. We provide a knowledge base link (below) to find the MAC address for most IoT. Once you have your MAC address, register your device (bottom of page).
NOTE: We have received reported cases of registration confusion on mobile devices, therefore, we recommend using a computer.
Find the MAC address for your Device
About Smart TV Platforms and MAC RandomizationGoogle / Android TVs:
- Behavior: Newer software builds or specific device manufacturer implementations may default to randomized MAC addresses for Wi-Fi connections.
- Impact: This can block connections on managed networks or campus Wi-Fi that require strict MAC address white-listing.
- How to Fix: Go to network settings, navigate to privacy or advanced options for the saved Wi-Fi connection, and switch the setting from randomized to device MAC
Most other Brands (Samsung, LG, TCL):
- Most traditional smart TVs use a permanent hardware/MAC address. In this case, no changes are needed. To be sure, check the advanced WiFi network settings as some software updates on newer platforms occasionally introduce privacy features similar to mobile devices.
Apple TVs:
- Behavior: tvOS does not feature standard user-facing MAC address randomization for its main network connection.
- Exceptions: Apple TVs use routine Wi-Fi sequence number randomization during unassociated scans, and recent tvOS updates or specific auxiliary features (like acting as a router bridge for paired HomePods) can occasionally display or generate secondary virtual MAC identifiers on a local network
